Chevron pipeline leak spills 500 barrels in Utah stream

Published:

An oil pipeline owned by Chevron Corp. leaked late Friday and early Saturday in Salt Lake City, pouring as much as 500 barrels of crude oil into a nearby creek.

Fire crews stopped the flow Saturday and authorities said there was no effect on drinking water. Still, residents were advised to avoid some water-access points.

Chevron spokesman Kurt Glaubitz said the company was taking "full responsibility" for the leak and would investigate the cause and size of the spill. "We do not anticipate any impact to our operations at this time," Glaubitz said.

Authorities were first notified of the leak early Saturday morning, but the government estimated oil had leaked for several hours before the notification went out.
