Train derails in N.J., releases hazardous materials
Published:
A freight train derailed this morning in southern New Jersey, resulting in the release of hazardous materials into the air.
One of the derailed cars leaked gaseous vinyl chloride, a chemical that can cause nausea and breathing problems. All of it has since dissipated, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection said.
Residents in the region have been told to stay inside as a precaution. More than a dozen people have been evaluated for potential respiratory problems.
The derailment sent two tanker cars over a bridge and into Mantua Creek, which empties into the Delaware River. Another car is hanging over a trestle. It is unclear what caused the derailment (AP/Wall Street Journal [subscription required], Nov. 30). -- JE
