High gas prices pump life into transit plans

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. - Note to visitors: Take the wrong bus, and you could find yourself stranded two-and-a-half miles from the compact downtown of this sprawling suburb. Once you get there, though, pocket your car keys, because your shoes are all you need. In recent years, Arlington Heights has renovated its downtown and its old railway station, drawing residents toward a high-density area with access to public transit. The changes are part of a transit-oriented development model that could get millions of Americans out of their cars and into walking shoes. Go to story #1
