Preparing for a U.S. carbon market, one firm looks to a trail blazed in Europe
NEW YORK -- As the European Union's emissions trading system matures and a regional cap-and-trade program among Northeast states in the United States develops, investment banks are busy consolidating their carbon trading knowledge to position themselves for emerging markets on this side of the Atlantic. Currently, most firms are focusing on the U.S. voluntary carbon market, buying stakes in emissions offset projects with the aim of getting domestic experience before a federal system launches. One, though, is taking a wait-and-see approach. Barclays Capital, the investment arm of the London stalwart Barclays PLC, is focusing instead on the compliance systems in Europe. Go to story #1
