A dwindling population helps a monastery go green
BERRYVILLE, Va. -- How many monks does it take to change a light bulb? That depends on whether they've gotten around to installing the compact fluorescent ones inside the abbey. For the Holy Cross Abbey in Berryville, the preferred answer is "Not many monks at all." Situated on 1,200 acres along the Shenandoah River, the Trappist monastery recently decided that for it to remain viable in years to come, its environmental ambitions will have to go way beyond the bulbs.
