Decades-old global pact morphs into potent climate treaty
Nearly every country in the world agreed last week to halt enough greenhouse gas emissions to slow climate change more than the Kyoto Protocol's first phase. This deal was brokered under the Montreal Protocol on Substances That Deplete the Ozone Layer, which originally did not address climate change but has focused since last year as much on dampening the greenhouse effect as on shrinking the ozone hole. When Dale Roberts was mulling over how to give his independent coffee shop, Java Shack, a distinctive flair in a crowded and very competitive market three years ago, he decided green was the way he should go. He began with small steps, and three years later, the shop gets all its energy from wind power and recycles most of its waste. The Arlington, Va., business is one of a growing number of food establishments to seek advice from the Green Restaurant Association, which certifies restaurants that commit to going green.
