In coal country, where TV ads portend doom, miners defend their heritage
CLINTWOOD, Va. -- Today's election is seen by many in this coal-rich mountain town as a judgment on their way of life, more than a century old, that threatens to push their community a little faster into history. Mining is the economy's center here, with everything else circling around the mineral found high and low in the complex terrain of remote ridges and gulches. Restaurants serve coal workers.
