After swimming through Sandy's havoc, beach town residents want to stay put

Six months ago, Superstorm Sandy ruined 214 homes in Union Beach along the Atlantic Ocean in northern New Jersey. Many were swept away by rising floodwaters and, residents say, a large wave that suddenly appeared. An additional 47 homes are still waiting to be demolished. Several streets are empty of structures. It's the kind of blank canvas that other towns hope to create through a federal buyout program, meant to remove surviving houses from high-risk floodplains. In Union Beach, the storm did the job for them. Yet the residents don't want to surrender their shoreline to nature. They're focused on rebuilding.
