So when the city was preparing to renew its 20-year contract with Xcel Energy, a large, investor-owned utility that provides its power, Boulder decided to do something different.

Activist investors will put forward a record 142 shareholder resolutions during the upcoming proxy season asking corporations to strengthen their environmental commitments.
The resolutions cover a broad range of topics and industries. But a common thread running through many is a demand for greater transparency about the risks associated with the production and use of carbon-based fuels and the resulting greenhouse gas emissions.
