Indictment may doom Stevens' re-election hopes, give ammo to Democratic challengers
The indictment of Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) by a federal grand jury appears likely to end the 40-year political career of the Alaska icon -- whether it comes in a courtroom or at the ballot box. Though Stevens' allies and opponents have thus far largely held their fire on the charges, political pundits say that the indictment -- regardless of whether or not Stevens is guilty -- would make it virtually impossible for Stevens to win another term in the Senate.
