1. POLITICS:

From EPW Committee perch, Vitter uses 'guerrilla' tactics, grills McCarthy

Since taking over the ranking member position on the Environment and Public Works Committee, Sen. David Vitter has made no secret of his feelings for U.S. EPA. The Louisiana Republican has issued dozens of press releases and letters to the agency on everything from Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests to questions about EPA's scientific testing practices. And the volume has only increased as the nomination of Gina McCarthy to head the EPA moves forward.

2. CAMPAIGN 2014:

Will prospect of energy panel gavel boost Landrieu's re-election hopes?

A spate of Democratic retirements could boost Louisiana Sen. Mary Landrieu (D) to the top spot on the Energy and Natural Resources Committee in the next Congress. But first, she has to get through a tough campaign -- and it remains to be seen if the three-term senator will be able to turn the promise of a committee chairmanship into a successful re-election bid.
