Key appropriator avows 'moderation' even in heat of GOP primary battle

BOISE, Idaho -- A little more than a week before the GOP primary that will effectively determine whether Rep. Mike Simpson will win his re-election bid, the Republican lawmaker stood Sunday in the frigid studio of Idaho Public Television. While he was only a few feet away from his challenger, attorney Bryan Smith, the two men weren't looking at each other or attempting to make small talk as they waited for the hourlong debate to begin. But then the lights came up and the sparring began.
