Could risk analysis prevent future deepwater disasters?
An invisible leak of millions of cubic feet of natural gas is ongoing in the North Sea in the United Kingdom, and the operator, Total SA, is still trying to gain control of the well. The leak, entirely unexpected, brings to mind the Deepwater Horizon blowout that two years ago today started spewing 5 million gallons of crude into the Gulf of Mexico. Within months of the spill, the U.S. Department of the Interior implemented a system of regulation, called the Safety and Environmental Management System, analogous to regulations in the United Kingdom.
