An invisible leak of millions of cubic feet of natural gas is ongoing in the North Sea in the United Kingdom, and the operator, Total SA, is still trying to gain control of the well. The leak, entirely unexpected, brings to mind the Deepwater Horizon blowout that two years ago today started spewing 5 million gallons of crude into the Gulf of Mexico. Within months of the spill, the U.S. Department of the Interior implemented a system of regulation, called the Safety and Environmental Management System, analogous to regulations in the United Kingdom. HOUSTON -- The legal battles over the record 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill are nearing a close, but ecologists say their work determining how to bring the environment back is only now beginning. Today marks two years since the onset of the Macondo well blowout and subsequent spill. About a half-dozen events are planned to commemorate the event. Scientists, meanwhile, continue their painstaking work to understand the longer-term implications for fish, insects and plant life that call the Gulf and its coastline home. Go to story #2
