High-dollar industry jobs leave inspectors in 'continual' turnover

An oil and gas well inspector advertisement posted last summer by the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection's Office of Oil and Gas included a plea from agency chief James Martin. "We are in a very challenging position," he said. "We have jobs that need to be done, but we don't have enough candidates for them because of the requirements, and we are limited in the salary we can offer." Nearly a year and a half later, the department is just on the verge of filling its 21-member staff.
