Judge orders agency to review animal antibiotic risks

A federal court last night ordered the Food and Drug Administration to re-examine whether the use of antibiotics in animal feed poses a risk to human health. The U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York said FDA has failed to adequately address concerns that the use of antibiotics to compensate for overcrowded feedlots and accelerate animal growth may lead to drug resistance and ineffectiveness in humans.
