1. AIR POLLUTION:
EPA, enviros strike deal on soot; final standard due in December
U.S. EPA will issue final air standards for soot that comes from automobiles, smokestacks and various industrial sources by mid-December, according to a legal settlement reached between the agency and environmental groups last night. The settlement is a victory for public health advocacy groups such as the American Lung Association, which sued the agency for dragging its feet on new national ambient air quality standards for fine particles.
