Eight tech startups preened for venture capital firms at a Department of Energy innovation summit last week in hopes of beating long odds and making it big in the capital-intensive and conservative energy industry. DOE's Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy is trying to coach its startups through the maze of ignorance, poor strategy and bad luck that's likely to keep their technologies from getting beyond their splashy websites.
