S.C. coal plant, efficient but doomed, offers lessons for states grappling with EPA rule

Despite its age and technology, the 60-year-old McMeekin Power Station near Columbia, S.C., consistently ranks as one of the most efficient coal-fired power plants in the United States. It's especially surprising because McMeekin starts at a comparative disadvantage -- most other top-rated coal plants have larger boilers that operate at much higher temperatures and pressure, automatically providing about a 3 percent efficiency boost.
