At EPA hearing, Northeasterners push for tougher 'transport' rule

PHILADELPHIA -- Here in the "tailpipe" of the country, where emissions from faraway power plants make it more difficult to achieve federal air quality standards, public health advocates and state officials today urged U.S. EPA to take stronger and swifter action against out-of-state pollution. Speaking during a public hearing on the agency's newly proposed Clean Air Transport Rule, they urged the agency to require additional cuts in emissions of sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx), which contribute to soot and smog. The draft rule released last month is intended to reduce SO2 emissions by 71 percent and NOx emissions by 52 percent, but the American Lung Association feels the reductions should be closer to 80 and 68 percent.
