After years of controversy, Salazar ends lease of Calif. oyster farm
Interior Secretary Ken Salazar announced today that he would not renew the lease of a popular California oyster farm, giving the business 90 days to clear out of a potential wilderness area. The announcement came one day before the expiration of the farm's 40-year lease with the National Park Service, and it ends years of deliberation over whether to let the farm continue to operate in Point Reyes National Seashore. The closure of Drakes Bay Oyster Co. also ends more than 70 years of mariculture in California's Drakes Estero.
