Shell ditches 2013 drilling plans off Alaska

Royal Dutch Shell PLC this afternoon announced it will forgo exploratory drilling this summer off Alaska's North Slope, citing damage to one of its drillships and planned maintenance and repairs to both its vessels this year in Asia. The decision was not unexpected, as it followed a 2012 season full of weather delays, operational mishaps and regulatory violations that drew intense criticism from environmental groups, Democrats and other skeptics of Arctic drilling.
