DOE pumps $16M into storage research in controversial strategy

The Energy Department plans to spend $16 million during the next five years to research the storage of spent nuclear reactor fuel in dry casks despite criticism from Republicans that the focus should remain on the shuttered Yucca Mountain facility. The Electric Power Research Institute, a nonprofit industry-backed research group, will lead the effort to design and demonstrate dry storage technology for the spent reactor fuel.
