The nation’s focus on artificial intelligence has led to an unprecedented boom in construction for data centers. E&E News reporters detailed the scope and impacts of that technological revolution in a panel this week.

Jason Plautz, a Denver-based reporter who covers electricity, shared some statistics to quantify the data center phenomena. He cited a report showing that data centers used about 4 percent of the nation’s electricity in 2023. That number could triple by 2028.

“There’s a lot of talk about … the potential AI bubble or some disruptions in the market, but I think it’s clear that this issue is here and it’s here to stay,” said Jason.
