The Trump administration is asking a federal court to reject a youth-led effort to block executive orders that call for boosting oil, gas and coal — or force the challengers to post a $1 billion bond.
In a filing with the U.S. District Court for the District of Montana, the government argued Friday that the young people suing the government over climate change do not have standing — or the legal power — to pursue an emergency injunction.
But if the court finds that they do, the government says they should post a significant bond as compensation for the disruption.
“The irreparable harm to the government in this case would be immense,” wrote Adam Gustafson, acting attorney general for the Department of Justice’s Environment and Natural Resources Division.
