Challengers say the agency is violating the state’s 2020 climate law by not adequately modeling planet-warming emissions.

An environmental group is suing a Vermont agency, claiming that it failed to comply with a state law that seeks to tackle climate change.

The Vermont chapter of the Conservation Law Foundation on Tuesday filed suit in Washington County’s Superior Court against the secretary of the Agency of Natural Resources for not meeting obligations under the state’s 2020 Global Warming Solutions Act, which requires Vermont to lower greenhouse gas emissions.

“Climate change is here, and it’s time for transparency, honesty and immediate action,” said Elena Mihaly, vice president of Conservation Law Foundation Vermont, who noted the state is still reeling from recent storms and flooding.

“We’re ready to do what it takes to ensure our decision-makers don’t fumble their critical job of protecting Vermont for future generations,” Mihaly said.
