Will Appalachian developers welcome independent environmental audits? The jury is out

A new set of performance standards for Appalachian shale gas development, announced last month by 11 energy companies, environmental groups and foundations, should get its first endorsements from other shale developers in several weeks, the head of the Center for Sustainable Shale Development (CSSD) says. But lining up broad support from the diverse companies drilling in the Marcellus and Utica shale basins will take time, if it can be done, CSSD interim Executive Director Andrew Place said in an interview.
