House sends Cobell settlement to president

In what is being called a historic moment, House Democrats overcame near-unanimous Republican opposition today to pass a multibillion-dollar legislative package to settle a 15-year dispute between the Interior Department and American Indians. By a 256-152 margin, the House approved a $3.4 billion settlement to the Cobell v. Salazar class action lawsuit, in which Interior was accused of mismanaging more than 300,000 individual American Indian trust accounts. The president is expected to promptly sign it into law.
