African swine fever outbreaks were on the rise in pigs and wild boar across the European Union last year, according to the new annual epidemiological report by the European Food Safety Authority published Thursday.
According to 2025 data, outbreaks of the disease increased by 76 percent in domestic pigs and 44 percent in wild boars compared with 2024, with the EU carrying out record levels of surveillance of the disease.
EU member countries detected 585 outbreaks in domestic pigs, 81 percent of which occurred in Romania. Although this marked an increase compared with the previous year, the figure remained below the levels recorded annually between 2018 and 2023, except for 2022.
The situation among wild boars is more concerning. The EU recorded around 11,000 outbreaks — the highest level since 2021 — with one-third of the cases reported in Poland.
