Agency watchdogs face steep spending cuts in Trump’s budget plan

Internal watchdogs at energy and environmental agencies would face deep budget cuts under President Donald Trump’s latest fiscal blueprint.

Inspectors general — including those at EPA as well as the departments of Energy and the Interior — have had a bumpy ride since the president fired several of their leaders soon after his inauguration. They have also dealt with an exodus of staff and even their websites going down temporarily under this administration.

Trump’s fiscal 2027 budget request could hamper them further, proposing to cut millions of dollars in funding and reduce personnel.

EPA’s Office of Inspector General would receive close to $37.8 million in fiscal 2027, according to Trump’s plan. That would be an almost $5.5 million cut to the watchdog’s enacted funding. The IG office would still receive an additional $11.3 million in a Superfund account transfer, the same as last year.
