Hawk Hammer trained as a lawyer and worked as a reporter before he started speaking up for the earth.

Now, following several years with the communications team at Defenders of Wildlife, Hammer has a new gig as national communications and media director for American Rivers. He started Monday, in a job that has a pretty broad reach.

“This includes developing strategy for strong safeguards to protect clean water and public health, restoring rivers by removing outdated, unsafe dams, and leading the organization’s America’s Most Endangered Rivers campaign,” Hammer said in an email.

The latter in particular carries the weight of legacy, as Hammer noted that American Rivers initiated the most endangered rivers campaign back in 1984, with the annual listing coming out in April.
