Backcountry Hunters and Anglers, one of the nation’s largest public lands and outdoors advocacy groups, is getting a new leader just three months after the departure of its previous president and CEO.

Ryan Callaghan, former chair of the group’s North American board of directors, will step in as the group’s president and CEO on Jan. 1, BHA announced Friday.

He replaces Patrick Berry, who started as president and CEO of the Montana-based group in January 2024 but left July 25 “to pursue new opportunities and focus on personal priorities,” the group said in announcing his departure last summer.

Callaghan said at the time that Backcountry Hunters and Anglers respected Berry’s decision to step down. He said Friday he’s fired up to take the controls of the non-profit that has chapters nationwide.
