Energy policy is playing a key role in Texas as voters return to the polls Tuesday to decide a handful of primary runoff elections — including one that could end the career of a longtime oil and gas ally, Sen. John Cornyn.

Texas held its primaries in March, but in races where no candidate got a majority of votes, the top two finishers go head-to-head in runoffs.

In addition to the marquee race for Senate — a showdown between Cornyn and state Attorney General Ken Paxton — voters will decide whether to advance Republican Rep. Chip Roy’s bid to become the state’s attorney general.

Both contests have seen an influx of spending from across the energy sector, with the fossil fuel industry backing Cornyn while renewable energy advocates look to block Roy.
