The nation’s top law firms last year did a record amount of work on renewable energy, but fossil fuel interests remain a major client, and many firms are falling short on the issue of global warming, according to a new report.

The scorecard from Law Students for Climate Accountability grades the 100 most prestigious U.S. firms — known as the “Vault 100” — on an A to F scale that assesses litigation, lobbying and other legal transactions for the oil and gas industry from 2021 to 2025.

The report, the seventh annual accounting by the student group, found the top 100 U.S. law firms helped close more than $2 trillion in fossil fuel deals over the last five years.

Top law firms also earned $35.8 million for lobbying on behalf of fossil fuel corporations, double the compensation received for renewable energy lobbying.
