House and Senate Republicans are offering legislation that could help President Donald Trump sweep aside federal agencies.
House Oversight and Government Reform Chair James Comer (R-Ky.) and Senate Energy and Natural Resources Chair Mike Lee (R-Utah) on Thursday introduced the “Reorganizing Government Act.” The bill would restore presidential power to reorganize and eliminate agencies.
“The federal bureaucracy has grown dramatically in size and scope, creating unnecessary red tape,” Comer said. “We must cut through the inefficiency and streamline government to improve service delivery and save taxpayers money.”
The legislation renews presidential power to propose reorganizations of the executive branch, extending that authority until Dec. 31, 2026. Congress must then vote on those plans within 90 days in an expedited, filibuster-free process.
