A bipartisan pair of senators at the helm of influential committees are pushing to expand the federal government’s work around nuclear waste recycling
Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Chair Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Energy and Natural Resources ranking member Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) are reupping the “Advancing Research in Nuclear Fuel Recycling Act.”
The bill, first introduced in 2024, would require the Department of Energy to conduct a comprehensive study of the costs, benefits and risks of recycling the nation’s spent nuclear fuel.
“No individual state should bear the brunt of nuclear waste accumulation,” Cruz said. “To advance American energy, we need to find ways to maximize our cleanest baseload energy source.”
