A new legislative package aimed at boosting the housing supply would change certain environmental permitting and disaster recovery practices along the way.
The bipartisan bill from the leaders of the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee would streamline some environmental reviews and an embattled post-disaster construction program.
The “Renewing Opportunity in the American Dream to Housing Act” is the latest bill to lean into permitting reform as lawmakers begin to get serious once again about overhauling regulatory requirements that have made building everything from housing to energy infrastructure slower and more expensive.
“I’m proud to lead the committee in considering comprehensive legislation that will increase access to affordable housing for Americans across the country,” Banking Chair Tim Scott (R-S.C.) said in a statement.
