Brazil has chosen more than two dozen climate luminaries to help bolster the global climate talks it’s hosting this November.

Top among them is Jonathan Pershing, a longtime U.S. climate diplomat, and Xia Zhenhua, the veteran climate envoy from China who was central to U.S.-China climate cooperation.

Selected because of the heft they’ve brought to the issue, the so-called COP30 envoys will represent a range of regions and sectors, providing a direct line to Brazilian leaders of the talks at a time when the effectiveness of the annual gatherings is in question.

“The envoys will act as sounding boards for sectors and regions, facilitating the flow of information and insights from their respective areas,” COP30 President André Aranha Corrêa do Lago, said in a statement.
