A powerful lobby group for corporate CEOs is calling on policymakers to ban climate-related shareholder resolutions.
Business Roundtable is also taking aim at a pair of influential investor advisory firms because of their tendency to support climate proposals and to closely scrutinize executive compensation packages.
“Congress should enact legislation precluding the inclusion of shareholder proposals relating to environmental, social and political issues in a company’s proxy statement,” Business Roundtable said in a white paper last week, referring to the filing public companies issue ahead of their annual shareholder meetings.
If lawmakers aren’t willing to silence sustainable investment advocates, the paper said, President Donald Trump’s Securities and Exchange Commission should step in.
