California bill would force insurers to consider wildfire mitigation

The goal is to ensure consumers are benefiting from major public investments in wildfire risk reduction.

California homeowners and lawmakers are spending billions of dollars on projects that are designed to protect people and property from climate-juiced wildfires.

But property insurance companies aren’t accounting for those investments when deciding whether to provide coverage in communities across the state.

That soon could change under a bill moving through the California Legislature.

The measure would force property insurers to consider wildfire mitigation efforts in their underwriting models, which help determine where the companies are willing to write coverage.
