California’s Senate Transportation Committee chair introduced a bill Monday aimed at restricting the sale of retired diesel trains.

The legislation from state Sen. Dave Cortese, a Silicon Valley Democrat, comes in response to Caltrain — a commuter rail service connecting San Francisco to the Santa Clara Valley — deciding last month to sell its decommissioned diesel locomotives to the government of Lima, Peru.

“Are we not all fighting to decarbonize the same air?” Cortese asked in a statement. “As a world leader in decarbonization in our transportation sector, we need to lead on this. We need to be serious about decarbonization worldwide.”
