California air regulators announced Friday that they won’t move forward with a rule to require motorcycle manufacturers to increase the sales of electric models.

The California Air Resources Board said it would not proceed with a hearing to consider changes to the state’s motorcycle emission regulations.

The rule, in the works since November 2023, would have mandated that at least 10 percent of new motorcycles sold by 2028 are electric, and 50 percent by 2035.

The proposed rule is part of California’s larger goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and pollutants from the transportation sector. While motorcycles make up a fraction of a percent of vehicle miles traveled in the state, CARB has noted that they contributed 2.2 percent of the conventional pollutants that make up smog in 2020.
