OTTAWA — Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is dialing down a report that Ottawa is on the brink of a bilateral trade deal with the Trump administration, though he’s not denying it either.

“We’re in ongoing discussions with the Americans,” Carney told reporters on his way into his Cabinet meeting Tuesday. “I wouldn’t overplay it.”

The Globe reports that a bilateral trade deal could be ready for the next time Carney meets with President Donald Trump. Both leaders will be in South Korea for APEC at the end of next week.

Carney said U.S. trade talks are at an “intensive” point, then returned to a go-to talking point — that he’s prioritizing a good deal for Canadians over a quick one.
