Speaking to state environmental officials, the highest-ranking senator on environmental issues noted “angst, the elephant in the room, so to speak,” about federal spending cuts.
Senate Environment and Public Works Chair Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) addressed President Donald Trump’s rapid-speed, agency-cutting efforts led by the so-called Department of Government Efficiency.
“Everybody’s worried because they just don’t know where we’re going,” said Capito, the keynote speaker at an Environmental Council of the States’ meeting in Washington on Monday afternoon.
“Belt-tightening is going to happen. I think as you see DOGE moving forward clumsily, you do see that there’s a lot of inefficiencies that they’re turning up,” Capito said.
