Climate clash likely during hearing on insurance, disasters

Democrats on the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee plan to assail the administration over stalled disaster relief.

On the heels of several recent natural disasters, a Senate committee this week will explore insurance markets and mitigation efforts.

The hearing of the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee on Thursday will likely focus on the role of climate change in disasters and turmoil in the insurance markets, at least from the Democratic side.

Democrats are expected to “call out the Trump administration’s dangerous and harmful record on disaster relief and how this ultimately hurts homeowners,” according to an aide granted anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.

The administration has denied a disaster relief request from Arkansas following a spate of deadly tornadoes there and has not made a request to Congress for disaster aid following the deadly wildfires in California earlier this year.
