The head of the U.S. delegation to a global maritime group has stepped down after the Trump administration threatened countries over the passage of rules meant to curb shipping carbon pollution.

Jeffrey Lantz, longtime director of commercial regulations and standards for the Coast Guard, has left the agency and will not lead the U.S. delegation to the International Maritime Organization’s upcoming Marine Environment Protection Committee meeting, according to three people familiar with the negotiations who had heard of his departure.

Lantz could not be reached for comment.

The Coast Guard would not confirm that Lantz had left the agency due to the government shutdown. But spokesperson Melissa Leake told TradeWinds last Tuesday that he had retired. TradeWinds is a media outlet that covers global shipping news.
