Colorado’s largest power provider is seeking permission to extend the life of a coal plant an additional 15 months to help address a potential reliability shortfall.

Xcel Energy has warned it could face power shortages in the summer of 2027 and potentially in 2028 given rising demand and the scheduled closure of several existing power units.

To fill the gap, the company is proposing to keep running Unit 2 of the Comanche generating station, which it had previously scheduled to retire last year. Additionally, the utility is proposing repairing another gas unit to draw more power from it, purchasing additional gas-powered generation and accelerating the deployment of two planned gas units.

The $77 million plan would be passed on to ratepayers.
