The top Republican on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee is investigating ties between Bloomberg Philanthropies and an environmental program that has lawyers in the offices of several state attorneys general.

Chair James Comer on Thursday sent letters to the New York University School of Law State Energy and Environmental Impact Center and former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s charitable organization, requesting information about the arrangements.

“The role of an attorney general is vital to America’s legal system,” the Kentucky Republican said in both letters. “The Bloomberg-NYU program, however, undermines faith in that system.”

The letters mark the latest spat over a program that has sparked conservative backlash in several states. Opponents of climate lawsuits targeting the fossil fuel industry have criticized the arrangements and several states have sought to outlaw the practice.
