The Senate Environment and Public Works Committee approved the nomination of Matthew Marzano for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission on Wednesday 10-9 with no Republican support.

Democrats, led by Chair Tom Carper (D-Del.), are now looking to confirm Marzano to fill the fifth and final spot on the regulatory panel before the end of the year, and potentially secure a majority at the NRC for as long as the next three years.

“[Marzano] has demonstrated his commitment to maintaining the public’s trust and confidence in the NRC’s work,” Carper said. “The commission is most effective and efficient when it has a full slate of commissioners to carry out its mission and provide certainty to the industry.”

During the vote, Republicans confirmed expectations that they would go against Marzano’s nomination in the hopes of receiving a new nominee when President-elect Donald Trump takes office next year.
