Wednesday’s House Natural Resources markup could prove contentious, with several hot-button issues up for debate.

The House Natural Resources Committee will hold a markup on a host of bills Thursday, some of them highly controversial and lacking bipartisan support.

The panel will vote on Arkansas Republican Chair Bruce Westerman’s “ESA Amendments Act of 2024,” H.R. 9533, a sweeping measure to overhaul the Endangered Species Act that Democrats have panned as an attempt to hollow out the law.

The legislation may gain some traction among House Republicans but is likely dead on arrival in the Democratically controlled Senate and White House. Still, the language shows what policies the GOP would pursue if it makes gains in November.

Westerman last week told POLITICO’s E&E News the bill would update the ESA for the first time in 50 years to make it more effective and prevent it from being abused to delay projects and development.
