The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee will consider dozens of bills Wednesday, including legislation on natural disaster recovery and battery purchasing.

The committee will take up two bills that contend with the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s processes after natural disasters.

H.R. 255, the “Federal Disaster Assistance Coordination Act,” would create a process to streamline and consolidate how information is collected and shared between agencies after disasters. It would establish a working group led by FEMA to reduce duplication in the damage assessment process.

The bill was introduced by Resident Commissioner Jenniffer González-Colón (R-Puerto Rico) in the aftermath of natural disasters in Puerto Rico and passed the House with bipartisan support in January 2023.
